The Facilities Gap: Why Demand is Outpacing Infrastructure

27th May 2026

More members, players, teams and more interest should be a positive sign for clubs.
But for many, it is also exposing just how hard it is to grow without the right
infrastructure in place.

Across Australia, community sport is seeing strong participation growth. More
players, more teams and more interest is a positive sign for the sector.
But for many clubs, this growth is starting to expose a growing challenge. Facilities
are struggling to keep up.

More members, same spaces
In many cases, participation has increased without a corresponding expansion in
infrastructure. Clubs are working with the same dated facilities, equipment,
resources and training spaces, while trying to accommodate more members and
longer seasons.
This often results in tighter schedules, reduced training access and increased wear
and tear on facilities.

Small limitations become big problems
What might have once been manageable constraints are now becoming significant
issues. Buildings that are no longer fit-for-purpose and deteriorating, overcrowded
storage facilities, lighting that limits safety and operational hours, changerooms that
lack privacy, outdated technology and response equipment, underwhelming social
and training spaces all start to impact the overall club experience.
As demand grows, these limitations become harder to ignore.

Volunteers are feeling the strain
The facilities gap doesn’t just affect participants. It also increases the workload on
volunteers and committees, who are responsible for scheduling, coordination and
maintaining operations.
Managing increased participation without the right infrastructure can quickly become
overwhelming, particularly for clubs already operating at capacity.

The gap is also an opportunity
While the challenge is real, it also presents a clear opportunity for clubs to plan
ahead. Identifying facility needs, prioritising upgrades and aligning projects with
available funding opportunities can help clubs move from reactive to proactive.
Those that take this approach are better positioned to support growth and improve
the experience for their members.

Better facilities do not happen by accident

Clubs must be proactive and plan ahead. Taking a proactive approach to planning
and funding will make a significant difference. With the right strategy in place, clubs
can position themselves strongly to secure funding and deliver meaningful facility
improvements.
